District of Fort St. James: Community Centre & Arena, Fort St. James, BC

This new integrated recreation centre and expanded arena streamlined operations and incorporated a new geo-exchange heating and cooling system.

Client Challenge

The District of Fort St. James needed a new community centre and expanded arena. This upgrade consisted of a new community hall, racquet court, art gallery, theatre support spaces, plaza, and an expanded arena with new shower and dressing rooms, including wheelchair-accessibility.

Landmark Solution

Landmark designed the project in 2 phases. Phase 1 included the design, bid, build of the new community centre, while Phase 2 involved the arena expansion.

To streamline functional programming, the community centre was strategically located adjacent to the arena. This limited the need for additional full time staff, and allowed complimentary services, such as the arena snack bar and dressing rooms, to support both the new hall and arena.

The new facility included a large geo-exchange system to provide heating and cooling of the existing building, the arena addition and any future developments.
