“The University of British Columbia has used the services of Monica Baillie Architect Ltd. since 1991. They have provided development management services for a number of UBC projects including those for renovations of a service building, the Header House [now Orchard House] – developed into offices for the Treasury Department, and renovations of the open office areas of the General Services and Administration Building. This limited involvement soon developed into a relationship whereby we took the opportunity to employ this firm for a wide variety of services for Facilities and Capital Planning.
“MBAL has provided services ranging from larger scale projects, such as Master Planning, to the small scale ones involving programming and detailed planning for individual academic units. Her office assisted in the development of Business Cases for the UBC Renew Program, a $120 million dollar joint venture between UBC and the Provincial Government to renew buildings in need of maintenance and that also urgently need academic upgrades. In this capacity she facilitated the renewal of several significant heritage buildings on campus including the Chemistry Building and the Buchanan Complex as well as assisting with programming and planning renewal of two Faculty of Science buildings, Copp and Friedman, for use as a facility for the university’s School of Rehabilitation Medicine and its Divisions of Physical and Occupational Therapy.
